Read a roofing proposal as a scope of work
By the end: Identify what a proposal includes, excludes, and leaves undecided.
A useful roofing proposal describes a system and a process. Look for the exact covering, removal or retention of existing materials, deck assessment, underlayment, flashings, drainage interfaces, ventilation approach, permits where required, cleanup, and how hidden conditions change the price. The lowest total is not comparable until the scopes are comparable.
Product warranty and workmanship coverage answer different questions. Ask who handles a claim, what is excluded, what records are required, and whether any registration is needed. Do not infer a guaranteed service life from a marketing name. Weather, installation, substrate, exposure, and maintenance matter.
- Bid A names only shingles and a lump sum. Bid B specifies the roof system, flashing scope, and a unit price for any approved deck repairs.
- B is easier to evaluate; that alone does not prove its workmanship or price is best.
- Ask both contractors the same missing questions and request written answers before comparing totals.
A text assistant can help turn two proposals into a comparison checklist. Give it only information you are authorized to share, remove personal data, and verify every extracted specification against the original. Never ask AI to certify roof safety, decide code compliance from a photo, or invent omitted terms.
