Coordinate the roof with residential solar
By the end: Explain why roof condition, attachments, and responsibilities should be resolved before solar installation.
A rooftop solar project adds a second system with a long expected service period. The roof below it must still manage water, support the designed loads, and remain maintainable. Before placing modules, arrange assessment of roof condition and remaining service life, structural suitability, and the proposed attachment details.
If a roof replacement is likely soon, compare the timing of replacement before solar with the later cost and responsibility for removing and reinstalling solar equipment. Ask who disconnects and recommissions it, who repairs penetrations, and whose warranty covers each interface. These are project-planning questions, not a recommendation to lift panels yourself.
Draw a handoff map with three owners: roofer, solar installer, and homeowner. Under each, list documents and decisions. Include roof warranty conditions, mounting details, access requirements, electrical permits, and utility approval responsibilities. Shared interfaces need an explicit agreement rather than an assumption that someone else will handle them.
- “Your solar proposal shows a new attachment near the valley. Who confirms the roof detail, water path, required access, and warranty responsibility before installation?”
- A useful answer identifies the responsible professional and the applicable design documents.
